El Centro’s Promotores de Salud Program is the recipient of a $100,000 grant from National Council of La Raza (NCLR). The purpose of this second-year grant is to find and sign-up those Latinos who are eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and educate people how to eat healthier on a budget. In the first year, the Promotores signed up 2,007 qualified individuals in the SNAP program, working to fight the trauma of food insufficiency in the area.

For this new grant cycle, the Promotores will be conducting outreach primarily in Johnson County to find, educate, and sign-up eligible members of the community in SNAP. Then they will take the education further by expanding on the successful activity of feeding a family of four a healthy meal for $5. This activity has been of particular value to our families and of great interest to them to see what all they can do with $5 to create a delicious, healthy, and filling meal for their families.

Each one of our Promotores feels very proud to have been part of this colaboration with NCLR. As the Promotores themselves say, “we’re being part of history in the processes for the change of the Latino generations.”
