Since 2019, El Centro has been a proud grantee partner of Community Catalyst in their Community Voices for Medicaid Initiative
The initiative sought out how to increase education about the Medicaid program and elevate the voices of those most impacted by it, at the local, state, and national level. The initiative not only provided us funding to increase our outreach efforts, it also helped strengthen how we can share the stories of those we serve.
One of the best ways we can learn from one another is by reading and hearing stories. Story telling increases our understanding of others’ perspectives and their points of view. Thus, El Centro published a series of storybooks titled Voces de Medicaid (Voices of Medicaid), as a part of our project. The stories shared identify the strengths and benefits of KanCare, our Medicaid program in Kansas. It also highlights the challenges and barriers people experience too, along with stories from community partners and Medicaid advocates about work being done to improve KanCare and Medicaid.
While the Community Voices for Medicaid Initiative has come to close, we celebrate all that has been accomplished, including the release of our fifth and final edition of Voces de Medcaid! Our work around Medicaid education and enrollment will not stop. Our Promotoras continue to present about KanCare in their weekly classes and at outreach events. Our bilingual staff continue to assist with enrollment and elevate our community’s voices through story sharing. In Kansas, we still continue to fight for Medicaid expansion and improvements to make KanCare more accessible and equitable for all.
